Overview

In order to use compartmentation to its fullest advantage and to provide maximum preparedness, all the doors, hatches scuttles access valve and fittings of damage control valves were given a classification. The classifications were based on the ships current status. The least protective classification was reserved for in port a safe harbor or port. The highest level for imminent possibility of attack. At the highest levels of protection each space was made a water and fire tight as possible often stopping all air flow making the inside temperature of the ship extremely high particularly when operating in the tropics or south pacific ocean.
