USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Fire, 8 November 2002         

 

On November 8, 2002, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) experienced a main machinery room fire while conducting operations in the Pacific Ocean. The fire was caused by a fuel oil leak. There were no personnel casualties but a few minor injuries reported as a result of the fire.

USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Fire, August 1988

On August 2, 1988, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) experienced an engine room fire caused by a fuel leak while conducting operations off the West Coast. The fire began with an explosion in one of the engine rooms and was extinguished 9 hours later after more explosions occurred due to the heat of the initial fire. There were no personnel casualties but 20 injuries reported as a result.

On June 26, 1980, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) collided with a Bangladesh merchant ship in the Arabian Sea. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported.

USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Fire, 10 July 1971

On July 10, 1971, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) suffered a machinery room fire while moored at San Diego, CA. The fire took one hour to extinguish. There were no personnel casualties or injuries reported.

USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Explosion, 11 September 1964

On September 11, 1964, a rocket motor used to boost aircraft explodes onboard the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CV 64) while conducting operations in the South China Sea. There was one casualty and 3 injuries reported.

USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Boiler Room Fire, 6 November 1961

On November 6, 1961, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) experienced a fire in a boiler room due to a broken oil pipe while conducting sea trials off the coast of New York. There were 4 personnel casualties and 9 injuries reported.

USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64), Hangar Deck Fire, 19 December 1960

On December 19, 1960, the Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier, USS Constellation (CV 64) experienced a flight deck hangar fire while in the last stages of construction at the New York Naval Shipyard. The fire was caused by a forklift that collided with a 502 gallon fuel tank. The fuel flowed out into the lower deck where workers were welding. A fire started and quickly grew because of the wooden materials that were stored in the flight deck. The Brooklyn fire department had to be called in to assist with the fire, which took 12 hours to extinguish. There were 50 civilian casualties and many injuries reported as a result of the fire. The commissioning of the carrier which was scheduled for early 1961 had to be postponed until October 27, 1961 because of the resulting damage from the fire.
